If you’re looking to save some cash on your grocery shopping, batch cooking is the way to go. Ask any thrifty person and I’m sure they’ll tell you the same! I save hundreds of pounds a year, not to mention a whole lot of time just by batch cooking.
SO WHAT IS BATCH COOKING?
Batch cooking is basically cooking up a load of food in one go. I make the most of my freezer and cook food in advance to eat throughout the month. It saves me money and it’s always handy to have healthy meals available when I can’t be bothered to cook.
HOW DOES BATCH COOKING SAVE ME MONEY?
Batch cooking saves me money because I can prepare a LOT of healthy meals for the same price as one ready meal. I usually get about 12-14 portions of veggie bolognese for about £3. If you were buying jars of bolognese sauce you’d be lucky to get more than 3 for the same price. You’d then have to buy all your other ingredients on top.
I buy items in bulk and multipacks to get them cheaper. I also keep an eye out for reduced yellow sticker items. By doing all my cooking in one go, I can make sure I use all of the ingredients up and nothing gets wasted. Wasted food = wasted money!
I bulk my meals out with lots of cheap basics. For example, I always put celery, carrots and mushrooms in my bolognese. They’re all cheap but give it a better flavour, and make it go further! When I’m making chilli, I add a few different kinds of tinned beans. It gives it a different taste and texture, and again bulks it out for just a few pence!
Having a load of meals already prepared also really cuts down on the temptation to grab a ready meal or takeaway which can be expensive!
WHAT FOODS ARE BEST FOR BATCH COOKING?
Anything that you can make in big quantities and freeze is ideal for batch cooking. My favourites are bolognese and chilli because they are ridiculously cheap to make in large quantities. They freeze well and are really nice healthy options.
I also make and freeze curries, shepherds pie, Yorkshire puddings, stew and even soup!
